In 2024, WaiBOP Football embraced the Positive Vibes campaign for the second consecutive year, with a grant from the Football Foundation that helped to cover costs for signage, stickers, and prizes across a series of tournaments and events.
Launched by Sport Waikato and Netball Hamilton in August 2023 in response to a noticeable rise in negative sideline behaviour, the Positive Vibes campaign aimed to raise awareness and educate players, coaches, and supporters about the importance of creating a positive sporting environment. There is a long-term focus of building a more enjoyable and supportive space for tamariki (children) and rangatahi (teenagers).
Inspired by the campaign, WaiBOP joined to promote a culture where “individuals manage their own behaviour, bring the positivity, not seek out anyone else to blame” (Karyn Walters, CEO of WaiBOP).
WaiBOP hosted several Positive Vibes events in 2024, including the Craigs Investment Partners Junior Festival (Rotorua), 5-a-side Festival (Hamilton), and the Weir Rose Bowl (Cambridge).
At each event, supporters were encouraged to wear pink, with best-dressed prizes awarded throughout the day. For those unable to wear all-pink, ‘Positive Vibes only’ stickers and temporary tattoos were available at each event to show support for the movement. “The referees, coaches, and supporters now show up looking for the pink activations—they arrive already embracing it,” Walters shared.
Referees, who are typically young volunteers, have reported “they feel more confident while involved in a game and that the criticism is less, players are also more confident to speak up if the sideline is not being supportive of them or the referee” Walters said.
While WaiBOP can’t be present at all games on Saturdays, the campaign has inspired clubs to take ownership of sideline behavior. “They’ve welcomed a campaign to align with their efforts,” Walters added.
Positive Vibes is set to continue into 2025, strengthening its mission to make football a more enjoyable, inclusive experience for all.
