Women in Leadership

In 2024, the Foundation paired with WaiBOP football, to support the delivery of a women's football leadership course. WaiBOP received a $11,000 grant to launch this course, which began in November 2024. This funding aided 40 women complete the course, aiming to provide them with essential skills, confidence, and a robust support network to thrive in football environments.

Since 2000, WaiBOP has led the way in growing football across diverse communities. This programme responds to the surge in women and girls taking up the sport, following the success of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, which sparked a 25% increase in female participation. As part of NZ Football’s Aotearoa United: Legacy Starts Now plan, the initiative is now delivered regionally to broaden its reach and impact.

The course focuses on both personal and professional development over three days, with each participant receiving $200 to create and implement a small community-focused football project. These projects are designed to reflect what the participants have learned while connecting with their passions and communities.

This year, the course introduces two cohorts to better meet the needs of different life stages: 'Ngaa Tipu Wahine' (18–25), which translates to "Group of Blossoming Women" and 'Ngaa Wahine Puaawai' (25+) meaning "Group of Blossomed Women", with names gifted by board member Cheri-Lee Atkinson to reflect cultural significance and growth.

For the first time, other regional sport organisations, including Swimming Waikato and Sport BOP, will take part, strengthening collaboration and cross-sport leadership development. Participants praised the 2023 programme, with 100% agreeing it was valuable, well-organised, and impactful in building their skills and confidence.

In 2024, the course expanded to 21 participants, with each group taking part in a two-day workshop, including a day of shared learning to foster tuakana-teina (peer mentoring) between age groups. Feedback showed a 90% satisfaction rate and an increase in participants’ confidence to express ideas and try new things.

"The leadership course was an excellent oppurtunity to meet other young women in the football community, and develop our leadership potential. I have been able to implement all the skills we learned into not only the football space but many others too!" - Said Maia, who participated in the 18-25 group.

Projects that were developed include sessions on managing referee stress, supporting young athletes through puberty, and sport-based life skills programmes for at-risk youth, with rollouts planned from March 2025.

The WaiBOP Women’s Football Leadership Course continues to be a transformative programme that blends cultural identity, skill-building, and community engagement — shaping the next generation of women leaders in sport.
